The humanoid bipedal structure is suitable for a assitive robot functioning in the human environment. However, the bipedal walk is a difficult control problem. Walking just on even floor is not satisfactory for the applicability of a humanoid robot. This paper presents a study on bipedal walk on inclined planes. A Zero Moment Point (ZMP) based reference generation technique is employed. The orientation of the feet is adjusted online by a fuzzy logic system to adapt to different walking surface slopes. This system uses a sampling time larger than the one of the joint space position controllers. The average value of the body pitch angle is used as the inputs to the fuzzy logic system. A foot pitch orientation compensator implemented independently for the two feet complements the fuzyy controller. A 12-degrees-of-freedom (DOF) biped robot model is used in the full-dynamics 3-D simulations. Simulations are carried out on even floor and inclined planes with different slopes. The results indicate that the control method presented is successful in enabling the robot to climb slopes of 8.5 degrees (15 percent grade)

    Get PDF
This study was conducted to research learning style preferences of agriculture students. Specifically, the objectives which guided the study were: (1) to determine the learning style preferences of undergraduate agricultural students enrolled in a given Soil Science course and (2) to ascertain if there were differences in the students’ course grade average (CGA) in the given Soil Science course when the treatment group were taught according to their learning style preferences versus the control group. For research question two, there was a hypothesis statement to determine if modifying the instructional approach to the students’ learning style preference for the treatment group produces a higher course grade average (CGA) than the control group. The Productivity Environmental Preference Survey (PEPS) was used to obtain the students’ preferred learning style preferences. Results indicate that modifying the instructional approach to the students’ learning styles preference (Structure) would result in a higher course grade average (CGA) for the treatment group versus the control group

    Get PDF
The writer worked with representatives from Iowa State University, McAninch Corporation, Ziegler Caterpillar, and other organizations to develop advanced grade control classes at Iowa State University. Since these classes were the first known offerings of their kind, qualitative interviews were conducted to identify appropriate course curricula, educational outcomes, educational objectives, homework assignments, reading assignments, and quizzes. Educational outcomes and objectives were generated to expedite the process of becoming an advanced grade control specialist. These outcomes and objectives were helpful when determining course material, topics, and structure. Qualitative and quantitative surveys were administered after each course to evaluate course success and determine areas for improvement in future offerings. Furthermore, recommendations were developed for including advanced grade control in existing undergraduate courses. In addition, it was recognized that little academic information exists relating to file conversion for advanced grade control. As a result, a discussion of file conversion is included to enhance the reader\u27s understanding of this process. Attributes of various design files are discussed to help employees better anticipate time requirements for file conversion and help designers realize the benefits of sharing electronic files. To further increase comprehension, the reader is lead through a file conversion case study on a site development project in Iowa

It is proven that the result of t-value based on the critical value of t-table by using 5% (0.05) significance level, the value of t-table 2.00. It means that t-value is higher than t-table (2.44 > 2.00). It can be seen from gain score control group and experimental group. The experimental group is higher than control group. Based on the result above, it can be concluded that context structure sound dictionary is effective to improve vocabulary mastery at the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 AlianKebumen in the Academic Year of 2015/2016

Pterodactyl: Control System Demonstrator Development for Integrated Control Design of a Mechanically Deployed Entry Vehicle

    Get PDF
The NASA-funded Pterodactyl project is a design, test, and build capability to (i) advance the current state of the art for Deployable Entry Vehicle (DEV) guidance and control (G&C), and (ii) determine the feasibility of control system integration for various entry vehicle types including those without aeroshells. This capability is currently being used to develop control systems for one such unconventional entry vehicle, the Lifting Nano-ADEPT (LNA) vehicle. ADEPT offers the possibility of integrating control systems directly onto the mechanically deployed structure and building hardware demonstrators will help assess integration and design challenges. Control systems based on aerodynamic control surfaces, mass movement, and reaction control systems (RCS) are currently being investigated for a down-select to the most suitable control architecture for the LNA.To that effect, in this submission, we detail the efforts of the Pterodactyl project to develop a series of hardware demonstrators for the different LNA control systems. Rapid prototypes, for a set of quarter- model or eighth-model vehicle segments, will be developed for all three architectures to validate mechanical design assumptions, and hardware-in-the-loop (HIWL) control approaches. A ground test control system demonstrator will be designed and built after the trade study is complete. The industrial-grade demonstrator will be designed so that it can be incorporated into a HWIL simulation to further validate the findings of the initial trade study. The HWIL simulation will leverage the iPAS environment developed at NASA's Johnson Space Center which facilitates integration testing to support technology maturation and risk reduction, necessary elements for the hardware demonstration development detailed in this paper

Families, General Strain, Social Control and Adolescent Pain Killer Use

This study determines whether family structure or transitions alone influence adolescent use of pain killers, as previous studies in delinquency and substance use would suggest, or if there are potentially mediating factors. The theories of general strain and social control are drawn upon to create mediating variables of abuse and failing grade (general strain) as well as attachment and school suspension (social control). The study will use data from the National Survey of Adolescents (1995). Binary logistic regression was used to estimate if family structure leads to increased odds of being abused, having a failing grade, and being suspended from school. Youth from a “traditional” family structure received a protective benefit over all other family structures. The same results were found for youth who had experienced the divorce or separation of parents as well as the addition of a new stepparent. Hierarchical logistic regression determined whether standard demographic variables, or those listed above that are based upon general strain and social control, mediate the effect of family structure and transitions on adolescent pain killer use. While initially it appeared as though youth from cohabiting homes and those who experienced parents divorcing or separating were significant predictors of adolescent pain killer use, once all other variables were controlled for, the experiences of being abused or suspended school, as well as age, were the only statistically significant indicators for youth using pain killers. This suggests that concepts from general strain and social control theory can help explain why family structure and change may be related to pain killer abuse. The implications and limitations of the findings are discussed
